A bad arm = no good for an artist

For almost now the past month I've been put on Workers Comp for my arm deciding to crap out on me. I found out I have tendonitis of the elbow, forearm, wrist, and thumb making my whole right arm useless. I'm unable to drive (and in LA you are pretty much stuck if you don't have a car), use a computer (thank goodness for my Ipad), bake, sew, or play video games.....so all in all this creative person is going stir crazy.

but...because of my lovely godsent Ipad I've been on Pintrest a lot! I've been thinking about when I get my own house instead of a rental, what color palettes I would do for the rooms. Here are a few pick so far from this week! (I need to do something creative, even if it's just creating imaginative boards!)

Ipad Class

Last night was the first of two classes to learn how to paint on a Ipad. While in class I learned how to make my own stylist (which I will post later) and which programs to use. I had already had sketch book pro but I have to say that procreate is a better/easier program if all you want to do is do some quick sketching. To the left is one the sketches I did after class....I have to say using a stylist makes it a lot easier to draw.

For a long time I've always wanted to make my own clothing so I wouldn't have to deal with the issues of "it's too big here, but too tight there!" syndrome that every woman has. Another reason why I wanted to start making my own clothing because everything that I love (anthro i'm looking at you) is soooo expensive!

This Christmas santa read my gift list and got me a sewing machine!!! whee!!! So all amped and set to go I ran to my nearest Joann's and bought some fabric and patterns....let me say one thing....ZIPPERS SUCK!

I took out my first pattern every and studied all of it before I started to cut...now my first skirt took awhile, a lot of sewing and undoing what I did, but as you can see below (the bright green one) I didn't do too bad. A few days later I did a second one and it went a lot faster than the first.

Lately i've been seeing more and more 'e mags' popping around online. What is so wonderful about them than a regular magazine is that if there is something you want to have, all you have to do is click the item and it sends you to the site to purchase it! Matchbook magazine feels like a Kate Spade ad come to life. It's very girly, preppy, cheeky chic. I am not ready for fall fashion at all. In LA our summers come late, while the rest of the country is pulling on soft warm sweaters in bright colors and their lovely leather boots with a pair of dark wash skinny's tucked in, I will be stuck in a heat wave of epic proportions (which is happening right now >.< ) and wishing it was acceptable to walk around in a bikini.

We call it Indian summer and it is dreadful, think of thick brown & gray smog skies along with hints of blue and seeing the heat bubbling from the cement/pavement and you will have an idea of what September is like here.

I haven't yet seen the show that everyone is talking about for a few seasons now, Mad Men on AMC. One thing that I do know about the show is the fashion! I truly believe that i was born in the wrong era because i'm constantly looking and allured to mid-century modern design and clothing of the late 40's, all of the 50's and early 60's. Yesterday I strolled by and in the window of Banana Republic there was a sign about about "NEW MAD MEN INSPIRED CLOTHING". Over at Creature Comforts Ez (the creator and writer of the site) shared a little about her dream about being a skilled photographer/stylist. she posted a few of her photos that she was practicing on and i think they are really good. But reading her entry i thought about my dream....i would love to own my own bakery one day. I would bake healthier option baked good and gluten free goods too. i've been currently trying out new baked goods on my friends and if they like them i keeping them on file so one day i can use them in my bakery.

i already know what i want to call my bakery and i have a slogan. Because i'm a design nerd, i've already got down my logo ideas and bakery packaging ideas too!. below are a few images of how i would love my small bakery/cafe would be like.

So lately i've been pretty sad that i haven't been able to ride my cruiser bike because i don't have a decent enough bike rack that can hold it all the way to the beach or a car large enough to thrown it in the back. so instead i've been looking at images of bikes wishing that soon i can ride My candy apple red cruiser again.

A Suprise LAX and Beach Trip

Yesterday my brother-in-law was headed back to school because he was visiting for Easter, sadly after going though LAX security and waiting for his plane to board he received the news that everyone hates to hear...."your flight has been canceled". He was lucky enough to find another flight out but it wasn't till many hours later. He called my husband and i to see if we would like to have lunch with him and of course we said yes.

We headed out to Pann's Restaurant. The restaurant is a pretty unique building where it holds the tradition of the “Googie” style architecture. Pann’s has received The Los Angeles Conservancy’s Award for best example of “Classic 50’s Coffee Shop” in our city and has been the location choice for numerous award winning films such as PULP FICTION, XXX, BEWITCHED and most recently NEXT. The best part is of course.....the food.

After dropping off my brother-in-law back at LAX after our delish meal my husband surprised me by driving us over to Manhattan beach! I LOVE Manhattan beach, the long stretch of beach, bike route and walking route with all the large unique homes (which i posted a few pictures below they range between beautiful and creepy). we spent an hour and a half walking around looking at the homes and at the water, it was quite pleasant.

Everyone should at least ONCE in their lives do the House of Blues Easter Gospel Brunch. Walk in and you'll find tables lined up with white tablecloth linens and share a seat next to a stranger. The food ranges from Creole to America Breakfast and all of it is down right good! Now to the best part, the performance. The curtains open up on that stage and a large wall of voices meet you singing from old r&b, gospel, acoustic and acappella. These people sing and play with all their hearts and everyone in the building is moving and waving their hands. Hallelujah! When the event is done it leaves you feeling light hearted and joyful the rest of the day. Happy Easter.

Paris i miss you...

Daily I click over to Hip Paris Blog to see what amazing things they find in Paris. Today they had a post "I know I'm in Paris when..." and it made me think over the best parts of paris i miss. It hasn't been a year yet since i've been there but it feels like eternity. i remember looking out of the plane window as i was landing in paris and seeing the city sprawled with buildings and in the middle there was the Eiffel tower calling to me to visit.

If you ever go to Paris and staying for a week or longer you should just rent a apartment, then you truly emerse yourself into the culture of the city. My husband and i were very lucky to find an adorable apartment for a great price over in the 14 arrondissement which was near the metro, monoprix and a boulangerie. We bought our fresh bread every morning to go with our breakfast and for our lunch. lunch was always a fresh baguette with emmental cheese and ham with a bag of monoprix chip bag that we would eat in a little park we would find while we were out. every afternoon we would find a cafe to sit at and have an espresso with a dessert trying to figure out what to do next, and dinner most of the time was what i made in our little rental kitchen.

our last night we ate at a restaurant that we would pass by on our way to the metro that was just AMAZING! i ate and ate and ate till i felt ill, it was all delish.

i miss paris so much, every time i see someone win a trip or talk about how they are going i'm not going to lie i get jealous. they get to go to my favorite place in the world and i don't know when i'll be able to visit again. One day i will make my way back....one day.

Building it up

Since my last post I've been searching the internet for items for my costume and I've finally have found some stuff that i think would be perfect!

the first is the halter leather corset, it's a bit pricey but i think it's very similar to my drawing and would work really well.

Next is the jacket, it's pretty dead on! it has the ruffles around the collar and it's a fitted short jacket. again, a little on the pricey side but that's why I'm working on it now, I'm going to slowly gather the pieces over time instead of all at once.

And finally I've found my goggles, I'm going to tweak them a bit and see if i could somehow create them to light up on the inside with a small battery operated led light to give it that steam punk feel.

My New Project Revealed!

So before last halloween a group of my friends and myself were trying to think of costume ideas for this year. The one that we all agreed with doing is Steam Punk Western. we have two people being outlaws, a few whores, a ninja ( yes you read that right) and i'm going to be the bad ass sheriff that has to take care of them all! Below is a sketch of what i would like to make my costume into and i'm currently working on my friends costume sketches and my husbands. i'm super excited about how this will turn out! btw, we already have our weapons we are using nerf guns which we will paint and modify to look steam punk. i'll be posting those at a later time.

Art Blocks for Ghana: My Panel

A month or so back I decided to participate in the "Art Blocks For Ghana" project.Everyone participating were given a square wood block to work with the theme of "Home". There will be an exhibition of all the wood blocks at Gallery Nucleus in L.A, in March 2011.

When I first started thinking about what I should do for my project I had a mental block. What does home mean to me? Does it mean the memories I had as a young child playing out in the country in my Grandparent's fields with my cousins? The times I remember cooking with my Grandmother? My mother and father tucking me into bed?

no....i didn't want to do something too literal....and then my husband said why don't you draw Bella? I though okay, why not she's cute! Right away I took some pictures of her and once I was done doing the pictures....I started to wonder.....how does Bella translate to the theme home?

then...it struck me! To let some of you that don't know this, Bella is a rescue dog. We found her at the humane society in Pasadena. Apparently the owner she had before was a homeless man and he wasn't able feed her anymore so he brought her in so she could find a safe home. One night just a few weeks after we brought her home from the pound I was sitting on the bed ( watching tv and doing some fun sketches) she curled up next to my legs with her favorite hedge hog toy ( which we call it her "baby" ) and fell sound asleep. She looked so peaceful I had to do a few quick sketches of her.

Well, as I was struck by this memory, I searched for my sketchbook of the few sketches i did of her that night and the one below really struck me.....in the sketch she looked at home. home....a place that is warm, safe and full of love. Bella was rescued and found her home.

I decided to not fill the whole panel and did the drawing on the lower right corner to show that in this large space, Bella is not concerned with anything else in the world but her "baby" and her new home. I wanted people to feel as though she is being cuddled and hugged by the corner of the panel.

So sitting here at work, I tend to look out my window and space out. While doing this about...lets say a few minutes ago, I realized that in 5 months I'm going to be married!
It is pretty mind boggling, the other night while i was drifting to sleep, I came to a slow realization that soon my room will no longer be MY room. That it will be either one of my brothers or a computer room. no longer will i have my yellow walled and white trim room that i love so much. No longer can I wake up on the weekends and find my family right outside my room sitting in the living room watching tv and having breakfast around 11 or noon. No more nights of Anthony playing his game loudly where it wakes me up and makes me yell at him to lower it lol. No more coming home from work to find dinner ready to eat with my whole family. In 5 months my life is going to completely change, and i am excited about it, starting my own family with Alan, but at the same time I'm sad that I'm no longer my parents little girl living with them.

I want to get a vintage but modern feeling for the wedding. I'm in the process of creating my wedding toppers, yes I said I'm making them. Maybe when I'm done with them I can post a picture.

After going over the guest list today for Alan's and I's wedding, I just feel absolutely drained. So many people to include, and just not enough money to have the wedding I've always wanted. I know I know, no one ever gets their dream wedding, but I'm not really asking for much. I just want a nice reception with all my friends and family all together eating, laughing, drinking, and dancing.

I have fond memories of weddings from my aunts and uncles. The church wedding where the bride enters and all eyes are on her, how everyone is so happy and claps when the priest says, "you may now kiss your bride", and everyone then jumping into their cars or crossing the street to the reception where there are tables with pretty flower center pieces, a dance floor with a DJ playing 80's music, a fog machine, the bar where all my uncles went to drink, and a large wedding cake looming in the background.

Those were the weddings I remember and always hoped that I too would have one day. Now with the reading and tv watching I've done about weddings, at times I feel overwhelmed and we haven't even done anything yet. Just thinking about all the work to be done is daunting. It scares me, it really does. At times looking at the wedding magazines or the tv shows causes it, everything is so perfect. Yes there is a huge crew that sets up the photos and tv shows, but it would be nice if my own wedding could emulate them.

I know that the perfect wedding shouldn't be so hard pressed at the end of the day Alan and I will be man and wife, and really that's what it is all about. But, there is that little girl in me that has always dreamed of a princess wedding.

Snow White

So, I'm working on this snow white deal that work is putting together. we were asked to illustrate a disney princess for the Snow White anniversary thing. well, here is a first drawing of my snow white. i originally wanted to do a Pin-up snow white...but i guess that wouldn't go over too well, so she still has the pin-up pose, but she's just a little more covered. Right now i'm working on the wood creatures and when i get more done i'll put them up.

Slowest Day EVER

Every time I look at the clock, it seems like it hasn't moved. I'm not
really excited about summer this year. Alan is going away in about a month til the second week of July...sad day, and I really have no plans. The Wave of Nausea

So, yeah no post yesterday. I was in my bed clinging on to my pillows and sleeping...well trying to sleep so the pain would go away. I woke up running to the bathroom to throw up...once, twice, three times.after the third time my stomach gave me a rest. i spent the day trying to hold on to the water and crackers i ate. By evening i was feeling better and ate some soup and didn't hurl. yay! today i woke up feeling woozy and sluggish but able to walk around and didn't feel nauseated.

This site is half in french and in english, Delphine Doreau is the owner of this fine blog. She is a concept/texture artist, and an illustrator. She does alot of adorable drawings of bunnies, birds, and little girls dressed up in fruit. Not only is her site great to look at and to get inspiration, but she has tutorials on how she does her work so you can learn to replicate it.

A New Start

So it's another year and it feels as though my life has been thrown out of a fast moving car.
Since graduation last year I had applied to a bagillion places and heard nothing. After feeling depressed and having a lack of talent in my field, I took a chance and applied for a design job for Disney. Just a few days later, while checking my e-mail religiously, I got a reply from Disney, saying that they were intrested. I was so excited that I screamed and litterly jumped out of my seat while reading the e-mail. I called back and set up the interview, the interview went well and now I'm working there. I love my job, and the team I work on, I get excited when I have to go to work every morning, I know, I know sounds lame but it's something new for me.

Not only have a found a job with a great company, I got engaged! We wont get married till Alan is done with school, but its just fun to slowly plan and think of ideas of what to do. So life has been pretty crazy.

So here I am to share my life, my love of art, and the love I have for Disney.
